AI product photography vs a photo shoot: real costs per SKU
What a lifestyle product shoot costs per image, what AI product photography costs, where each one wins, and a decision rule for small catalogues.

Lifestyle images lift conversion because they answer "where does this live in my life?". The question for a seller with 40 SKUs is not whether to have them, it is how to afford them for every product, not just the hero.
A shoot, honestly priced
A half-day lifestyle shoot with a photographer, a location or built set, and basic retouching lands between $50 and $300 per usable image once you divide the day rate by the images you keep. Props, models and reshoots are extra. Lead time is one to three weeks. The output is excellent and completely real.
AI product photography, honestly priced
You upload one product photo. The product is cut out and its pixels locked; the AI builds the room, the surface, the light and the contact shadow around it. Four candidates per run, 3 credits, about a minute.

At list price that is well under a dollar per kept image. The product is as real as your photo of it; the surroundings are synthetic.
Where each one wins
- Shoot: campaign hero images, products that need a human interacting with them, anything where the environment itself is the story.
- AI: gallery images two to seven for every SKU, seasonal refreshes, marketplace-specific crops, testing which scene converts.
The decision rule
Shoot the three products that carry the brand. Generate the gallery for everything else, in the same scene family so the catalogue looks consistent. Re-generate when the season changes instead of re-booking.
What to check in AI output
- The product must be unchanged — labels, colour, proportions. Tools that regenerate the whole image fail this; look for "composited" or "pixel-locked".
- The shadow must touch the surface where the product stands.
- No lookalike products added to the scene.
