Shopify product image sizes and how to export every one from a single photo

Shopify’s official limits (5,000 × 5,000 px, 25 MP, 20 MB), the 2,048 × 2,048 size that displays best, how the CDN serves every other size from one master, and how to get the Amazon, TikTok Shop and Etsy sizes from the same photo.

Shopify product image sizes and how to export every one from a single photo

Shopify does not ask you to export ten image sizes before upload. You upload one well-sized photo and Shopify's CDN builds the versions a theme or browser needs on request. This page covers the official limits, how that automatic resizing works, what to do when you need fixed sizes for other channels, and the mistakes that cause upload errors or blurry listings.

Key takeaways

  • Two ceilings, both hard: product and collection images must be under 20 MB and no larger than 5,000 × 5,000 px (25 megapixels). A small file can still fail on pixels.
  • 2,048 × 2,048 px usually displays best for square product images, per Shopify's own guidance; design around that one number.
  • Shopify generates the smaller sizes itself. Themes request widths and crops through the image_tag filter with srcset and sizes; you manage one master file.
  • PNG is Shopify's first choice, then JPEG; TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP are also accepted.
  • Other channels want fixed sizes (Amazon 2,000 × 2,000, TikTok Shop 1:1 from 600 px, Etsy 2,000 px); export those from the same master, not from a Shopify thumbnail.

Shopify's official image limits

Shopify's product media page sets both ceilings: "Product and collection images need to have a file size smaller than 20 MB", and images "can be any size up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels". The theme images page repeats that uploads cannot exceed either limit. Treat them as independent: a 3 MB JPEG that is 6,000 px wide fails on pixels, and compressing it harder does not help; reducing the dimensions does.

Formats. Shopify lists PNG as the best format, then JPEG, and also accepts TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP, including animated GIF and WebP. In practice JPEG for photographs and PNG for graphics with transparency covers a product catalogue.

The size to design around. For square product images "2048 x 2048 px usually displays best". It sits well under the 25 MP ceiling and gives the CDN enough detail to generate every smaller crop without upscaling. Keep one aspect ratio per collection so featured images display at the same size in grids.

One master, many delivered sizes

Shopify does not store a folder of pre-made copies next to your original. Files are processed after upload and multiple sizes are generated for responsive display; one image can be referenced by several products without re-uploading. The master you upload is the only file you manage; everything smaller is derived on demand.

Themes pull specific sizes with the image_tag Liquid filter, which emits srcset and sizes so the browser picks the file that matches its viewport. A sizes value such as (min-width: 1000px) 900px, calc(100vw - 2rem) tells the browser how wide the slot is at each breakpoint. Without srcset and sizes the browser has one image to download regardless of screen, which is why a poorly built theme section can push a desktop-size file to a phone. For a seller the upshot is simple: upload a good master and let the theme request the right width; the CDN is the export tool.

When you need fixed sizes outside Shopify

Shopify's admin editor crops, resizes and rotates one image at a time; there is no bulk export of sized copies. Marketplaces, on the other hand, want fixed dimensions:

ChannelSize to exportNotes
Shopify2,048 × 2,048 px (1:1)Any ratio up to 5,000 × 5,000; one ratio per collection
Amazon2,000 × 2,000 pxMain image on pure white, product 85% of frame; 1,000 px+ enables zoom
TikTok Shop1:1, at least 600 × 600 px; up to 9 imagesMain image front view on pure white, no text or logos
Etsy2,000 px or more on each sideFirst photo horizontal or square; files over 1 MB may fail to upload

Export these from the master photo, never from a Shopify-served thumbnail. PicBarn's export panel renders a chosen image at each of these presets from one project (Shopify 2,048 square, Amazon 2,000 square main and gallery, TikTok Shop 1:1 and 3:4, Etsy 2,000 × 1,600), and the AI product photography tool produces the lifestyle and pure-white versions from the same product photo; any image-processing script does the resizing part just as well.

How to change a product image size in Shopify

  1. Open the product, click the image in the Media section.
  2. Crop, resize or rotate in the built-in editor, or delete it and upload a replacement near 2,048 × 2,048 px.
  3. Save. The CDN regenerates the responsive sizes from the new master; you do not create smaller copies.

If the image still looks wrong in one theme section, the cause is usually the section's crop setting, not the upload: the theme decides how an image is cropped when its ratio does not match the slot.

Mistakes sellers make most often

Megapixels mistaken for megabytes. A file under 20 MB fails because it is over 25 MP. Check pixel width and height before touching compression.

Colour shifts between editor and storefront. Export in sRGB; wide-gamut or CMYK files can look different once compressed for delivery, and the final rendering depends on the shopper's browser and device.

Mixed ratios in one collection. Featured images with different height-to-width ratios display at different sizes in the grid. Pick one ratio per collection and crop to it.

Upscaled masters. A 1,000 px photo stretched to 2,048 px is blurry at every size the CDN derives. Start from the largest original you have.

Load time and shopper experience

Many themes use large hero images or slideshows that scale to the browser height. Lazy loading defers off-screen images, which keeps the first paint light, but the first image a shopper sees should not be deferred. A large master is not wasteful by itself: with srcset and sizes in place the phone gets a small derivative and the desktop a larger one, from the same file.

FAQ

What is the standard size for Shopify product images? 2,048 × 2,048 px for square images, per Shopify; hard limits are 5,000 × 5,000 px (25 MP) and 20 MB.

Is PNG or JPEG better for Shopify? Shopify lists PNG first, then JPEG. Use JPEG for photographs (smaller files) and PNG for graphics that need transparency.

How do I add more images to a product? Upload each as its own file in the product's Media section; each becomes a separate media item you can reorder or set as featured. No need to prepare multiple sizes.

Can I get Amazon or Etsy sizes from my Shopify images? Export them from the original master, not from the storefront. Amazon wants 2,000 × 2,000 on pure white; Etsy wants 2,000 px or more and warns that files over 1 MB may fail to upload.
