Virtual try-on for Shopify sellers: on-model photos without a shoot

How small apparel stores get on-model photos from a flat-lay or mannequin shot: pick an AI model, keep the garment pixel-accurate, export store-ready sizes.

Virtual try-on for Shopify sellers: on-model photos without a shoot

Flat-lay photos tell shoppers what a garment is. On-model photos tell them how it fits. For a small Shopify store the second kind used to mean booking a model, a studio and a retoucher for every drop. Virtual try-on replaces that with one upload.

What virtual try-on actually does

You upload a photo of the garment — flat lay, hanger or ghost mannequin. You pick a model from a library of synthetic people. The AI transfers your garment onto that model: the print, the stripes, the seams come from your photo; the body, the pose and the light are generated.

Striped tee: flat lay on the left, worn by the model on the right

That transfer is the part to care about. Tools that repaint the garment drift: a stripe gets thicker, a logo blurs, a collar changes shape. Tools that transfer it keep the pixels you shot.

A Shopify workflow that holds up

  1. Shoot once, flat. A clean flat-lay on white, front view, is enough. Photograph every SKU the same way.
  2. Pick one model per collection. Save it as your brand default so the whole collection looks like one session. Twelve body types and skin tones are available in the virtual try-on tool.
  3. Generate four, keep one. Each run gives four candidates. Choose the one where the drape reads best.
  4. Export at store sizes. 2048 × 2048 for the product page, 3:4 for TikTok Shop, 2000 × 2000 for Amazon.
  5. Keep the flat-lay as image two. Shoppers still want to see the garment straight on.

What works best

  • Tees, sweatshirts, shirts, dresses and outerwear.
  • Printed and striped fabrics — the print is the proof the garment is yours.
  • Front-facing, well-lit garment photos.

Hoods are the known weak spot: a folded hood in a flat lay is sometimes rendered as a collar. Shoot hoodies on a hanger with the hood open.

Cost

A try-on run is 4 credits for four candidates, 1 credit for a single image. Compared with a half-day model shoot per drop, that is the difference between photographing a few hero pieces and photographing the whole range.
