A top-down flat lay on a vanity is the beauty category's signature image: the product centred, a few small props arranged around it, soft even light. It works for palettes, serums, brushes and jewellery and it is the easiest scene to keep consistent across a whole collection.

The camera looks straight down; light is soft and shadowless apart from a small contact shadow; the surface is pale marble, linen or pastel paper with a dried flower or a ribbon kept out of the way. The product's finish, embossing and label stay exactly as photographed.
