Zoom threshold (1,000 px)

The zoom threshold is the image size at which a marketplace lets shoppers magnify a product photo; on Amazon, images 1,000 px or larger on the longest side enable zoom.

Zoom is the hover or pinch magnification on a product page, and for many shoppers it stands in for picking the item up. Platforms only offer it when an image has enough pixels to show detail.

Amazon's product image requirements set the longest side between 500 and 10,000 px and say that 1,000 px or more enables zoom. Walmart's guidelines recommend 2,200 x 2,200 px and set 1,500 x 1,500 as the minimum for zoom. Etsy recommends at least 2,000 px in width and height. Shopify says 2,048 x 2,048 "usually displays best" for square images and accepts up to 5,000 x 5,000 px or 25 megapixels.

The common mistake is upscaling a small image to cross the threshold. The platform then offers zoom, but the magnified view is blurry, which looks worse than no zoom at all; Walmart's guidelines say not to upscale. A second mistake is meeting the pixel count while leaving the product small in the frame, so zoom mostly magnifies white space. The 85% frame fill rule on Amazon helps here.

File size limits sit alongside pixel limits: Walmart's maximum is 5 MB, Shopify's is 20 MB, and Etsy warns that files over 1 MB may fail to upload. Save at high quality, then check the file size per platform.

PicBarn's per-platform exports are sized for each marketplace, but zoom detail still depends on the resolution of the photo you start with.
