Candle product photos: the gallery that sells on Amazon and Etsy

A candle buyer cannot smell your listing, so the gallery has to carry the scent, the size and the mood that a shop shelf would. That means a clean jar shot for the algorithm, then a lit, lived-in room for the person deciding.

The gallery this category needs

In upload order. Slot one is always your own photo.
  1. 1

Your own photo of the candle on pure white, lid off, jar and label square to the camera

It is the image every marketplace checks first, and showing the wax surface proves the pour is clean and even.

  2. 2

Lit candle in a dim living room, flame visible, lid resting beside the jar

A real flame is the emotional sale for candles and tells the buyer how the vessel glows when the wax warms.

  3. 3

Candle held in a hand or next to a mug for scale

Candle sizes are listed in weight, which buyers cannot picture, so a familiar object answers the size question before it becomes a return.

  4. 4

Scent notes card: top, heart and base notes in a few words beside the ingredients that inspired them

Scent is the main purchase reason and a short visual list is easier to scan than a paragraph in the description.

  5. 5

Close-up of the wick, wax and lid from above

Shows wick type, wax colour and lid material, which matter to buyers comparing soy, coconut and paraffin blends.

  6. 6

Gift or seasonal setting, such as a set table with greenery

Many candles are bought as gifts, and a seasonal image is the easiest one to swap when the calendar changes.

Platform rules that bite here

  • Amazon

The main image needs a pure white RGB 255,255,255 background with the product filling about 85% of the frame, and only accessories that are included. A lid, a box or a matchbook in the main image must actually ship with the candle.

  • Etsy

Most listings need at least one real, unedited photo of the actual item on a real background. AI can change the backdrop around a hand-poured candle, but the jar, label and wax must look like what the buyer receives.

  • TikTok Shop

The main image must be a front physical view on pure white, and placeholders and digital renderings are not allowed. A 3D-rendered jar from your label printer does not qualify; photograph the poured candle.

  • Amazon A+

Amazon's A+ guidelines ban "eco-friendly", "biodegradable" and "compostable" claims, including symbols, and "recyclable" needs a supporting note. Natural-wax candle sellers should keep these words out of A+ images.

What gets this category rejected or ignored

  • Lighting the candle in the main image with a flame that blows out the label or turns the jar orange, so the product no longer looks like the one in the box.
  • Adding a glow, smoke wisps or a flicker effect with AI that suggests a scent throw or burn the candle does not deliver.
  • Styling the main image with matches, dried flowers and a tray that are not included.
  • Shooting amber or frosted glass against white without enough light, so the jar edge disappears into the background.
  • No scale reference, which leads to "smaller than expected" reviews on candles sold by weight.

Questions

Should the candle be lit in the main image?

Keep the Amazon and TikTok Shop main image unlit, lid off, on pure white so the jar and label read clearly. Save the lit shot for image two, where the flame and the room can do the selling.

Can I use AI to put my candle in a living room?

Yes, as a gallery image, as long as the jar, label and wax colour stay exactly as made. On Etsy keep at least one real, unedited photo of the candle in the listing as well.

How do I show the scent in a photo?

Use one image that pairs the scent notes with the ingredients that inspired them, such as orange peel or cedar shavings next to the jar. Keep the words short and in real text so they stay legible at thumbnail size.

How many candle photos should I upload?

Amazon recommends at least six images and one video. Etsy allows up to 20 photos, so a full set of six to eight, plus a short video of the flame, fits on every major marketplace.
