Home decor product photos: scale, styling and the room shot

Decor is bought on how it will look in the buyer's own room, so the room shot matters more here than in almost any other category. The risk is styling so heavy that the buyer cannot tell what they are actually buying.

The gallery this category needs

In upload order. Slot one is always your own photo.
  1. 1

Your own photo of the piece on pure white, front view

Shows exactly what arrives without the room, which is what marketplaces check and what buyers compare against.

  2. 2

Styled in a living room on a shelf, sideboard or wall

Decor sells on context, and a room shot lets the buyer picture it at home.

  3. 3

Scale image beside a sofa, lamp or book

Size misjudgement is the biggest return reason for vases, frames and wall art.

  4. 4

    Material and finish close-up

Glaze, grain, weave or metal finish is where quality shows, and a close-up justifies the price.

  5. 5

Second styling: a different room or season

Shows versatility and gives buyers with different interiors a match.

  6. 6

Dimensions and what is included, such as fixings or a stand

Prevents "it did not come with hooks" reviews and confirms the fit.

Platform rules that bite here

  • Walmart

Larger items may be shown in an expected environment, but main images must avoid too many props and accessories not included. A mirror can sit on a wall; the console table underneath should not look included.

  • Etsy

Most listings need at least one real, unedited photo of the actual item on a real background. A handmade vase can have AI rooms in the gallery, but one photo must be the real piece in a real space.

  • Etsy

The first photo should be horizontal or square, and thumbnails crop to square, portrait or landscape, so shoot wider and centre the piece.

  • Amazon

The main image shows the whole product once on pure white with only included accessories; a styled shelf belongs in the gallery.

What gets this category rejected or ignored

  • Styled room shots where the buyer cannot tell which object is for sale.
  • AI scenes that make a piece look larger than it is, which TikTok's AIGC rules call false scale.
  • Wall art shown in a room with no dimensions anywhere in the gallery.
  • Finish colour drifting between photos because each scene has different light.
  • Main images cropped so tight that the base or hanging fixing is cut off.

Questions

How do I make sure the room shot does not mislead on size?

Include one scale image with an object everyone knows, such as a book or a lamp, and keep proportions true in any AI scene. TikTok's AIGC rules specifically prohibit false scale.

Can the main image be a room shot?

Not on Amazon or TikTok Shop, where the main image is the product on pure white. Walmart allows larger items in an expected environment, and Etsy and Shopify leave it to you.

How many styling shots do I need?

Two is usually enough: one room that matches most of your buyers and one alternative. The rest of the gallery should be facts: scale, finish and dimensions.

What is the best scene for small decor?

A cosy living room shelf for vases and objects, a desk setup for small frames and planters, and a holiday table for seasonal pieces.
