Amazon product image requirements: every rule in one list

Amazon splits its image rules across a product image page, a technical file page and category style guides. This page puts them in one list, from file format to file name.

The rules

Required, recommended and banned, in the platform's own words.
  • Accepted file formats

JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), TIFF (.tif), PNG (.png) or non-animated GIF (.gif). JPEG is the recommended format.

  • Formats that are not accepted

EPS, BMP, PDF, PSD and AI files are not accepted for product images.

  • Pixel dimensions

The longest side must be at least 500 pixels and no more than 10,000 pixels.

  • 1,000 pixels for zoom

Images of 1,000 pixels or more on the longest side enable the zoom function on the detail page.

  • Resolution and colour mode

At least 72 dpi. RGB is the preferred colour mode; convert CMYK files to RGB before you upload.

  • Greyscale only for grey products

Use greyscale only for products that are grey or silver.

  • Do not rely on ICC profiles

Do not rely on embedded ICC colour profiles to get colour right.

  • Compression and layers

Use minimal compression (JPEG at maximum quality) and flatten layers before saving.

  • Main image on pure white

The main image has a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255, with the product filling 85% of the frame, shown once and in full.

  • No reviews, ratings or shipping claims

No image may show customer reviews, star ratings or claims such as "free shipping".

  • No Amazon logos or badges

No image may show Amazon logos or badges such as "Amazon's Choice", "Best Seller" or "Prime".

  • No text or pricing on swatches

Swatch images must not contain text or pricing details.

  • Six images and a video

Amazon recommends at least six images and one video per listing.

  • File naming: identifier, variant code, extension

"The name is composed of the PRODUCT IDENTIFIER, the VARIANT CODE, and the image type", for example B00SAMPLE.PT02.jpg. MAIN is the primary image; alternates are PT01, PT02, PT03 and so on. The identifier is an ASIN, UPC, EAN or JAN "with no dashes, spaces, or other punctuation".

What this means in practice

Think of an Amazon gallery as one image with a fixed recipe and several with a content filter. The main image has to be pure white with the product filling 85% of the frame. Every other image can show scenes, scale, people, packaging and text, which is why infographics work, but no image may carry star ratings, reviews, "free shipping" claims or Amazon's own badges.

For files, export RGB JPEGs at maximum quality with the longest side comfortably above 1,000 pixels so zoom switches on; 2,000 pixels is a sensible default. Flatten layered files, convert anything from print in CMYK before upload, and keep greyscale for products that really are grey or silver. Do not count on an embedded colour profile to fix a colour; correct it in the pixels.

If you upload in bulk, name files by identifier and variant code, for example B00SAMPLE.MAIN.jpg and B00SAMPLE.PT01.jpg, with no spaces or dashes in the identifier. In PicBarn the gallery pack keeps your own photo in slot 1 as the main image, made pure white by the main image tab, and every scene, try-on or infographic is labelled as a gallery image, with photorealistic model exports already tagged contains-synthetic-performer.

Questions

What is the minimum image size for Amazon?

500 pixels on the longest side, and no more than 10,000. Aim for 1,000 pixels or more, because that is the size at which zoom is enabled on the detail page.

Does Amazon accept WebP, PSD or PDF images?

Amazon lists JPEG, TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF, with JPEG recommended. EPS, BMP, PDF, PSD and AI files are not accepted. WebP is not on the accepted list, so convert it to JPEG first.

How should I name image files for bulk upload?

Product identifier, a full stop, the variant code, then the extension: B00SAMPLE.MAIN.jpg for the main image and B00SAMPLE.PT01.jpg, B00SAMPLE.PT02.jpg for the alternates. The identifier can be an ASIN, UPC, EAN or JAN with no dashes, spaces or punctuation.

Do I have to label AI-generated images on Amazon?

Only images with photorealistic AI-generated people. Those need the keyword contains-synthetic-performer in the file's IPTC/XMP dc:subject field before upload. Real people edited with AI and non-photorealistic people do not need it.
