Etsy's unedited photo rule and what AI edits are allowed
Etsy now asks most listings for at least one photo that has not been edited at all, and limits how AI may change the rest. These are the rules, listing type by listing type.
The rules
At least one unedited photo
"Etsy requires at least one unedited photo for most items."
What unedited means
"An unedited photo should show the actual item against a real background and must not be edited or changed in any way."
First photo: the most realistic
"Make your first listing photo the clearest, most realistic representation of the item buyers will receive."
Allowed edits on other photos
Other photos may use AI-assisted tools to crop or resize, adjust lighting or colour, or change backgrounds, "as long as those edits don't make the item appear different."
No hiding damage
"Don't use AI to hide damage or change an item's appearance in a way that could mislead buyers."
Disclose AI-created items
"Sellers must still disclose when an item is created using AI" and "cannot misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation."
Print-on-demand: authorised mockups
For print-on-demand items, "you may use a stock photo mockup, if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use."
Digital items with a visual: real preview
For digital downloads with a visual component, such as printables and templates, "include a preview of the actual content buyers will receive."
Digital items without a visual: representative images
Digital downloads without a visual component "may use representative imagery, including AI-generated images", as long as it "doesn't mislead buyers about what they're purchasing."
Made-to-order: past finished items
For customised or made-to-order items, "use photos of real, finished items you've made in the past to help buyers see the quality of your work."
Patterns, recipes, seeds: a real result
For craft patterns, recipes, seeds and similar, "include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your product."
AI cannot be the only view of the result
"AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result."
What this means in practice
An unedited photo is straight from the camera: the actual item, on a real surface such as a table, a wall, a shelf or a hand, with no filter, no background swap and no retouching. Etsy's wording is "must not be edited or changed in any way", so even an exposure tweak takes a photo out of the category. If the photo is too dark, reshoot it in better light rather than fixing it.
The other 19 slots are more flexible. Etsy allows cropping, resizing, lighting and colour adjustments and background changes, including with AI, as long as the item does not look different from what arrives. A generated scene behind your real item is fine; recolouring it to a shade you do not sell, smoothing away a flaw or adding parts is not.
The listing type changes what the unedited photo has to be. Print-on-demand sellers may use an authorised stock mockup; printables need a preview of the real file; digital items with no visual may use representative AI images; made-to-order sellers show past finished pieces; and pattern, recipe and seed sellers need at least one real photo of something made with the product, never AI images alone.
PicBarn is built around this rule: the gallery pack puts your own unedited photo in slot 1 and adds generated scenes after it, so AI images are never the only view of the item.

Questions
Does the unedited photo have to be the first photo?
The rule is at least one unedited photo for most items. Etsy separately asks that the first listing photo be the clearest, most realistic representation of the item, so many sellers make the unedited photo the first one.
Can I brighten or crop my unedited photo?
Etsy says an unedited photo "must not be edited or changed in any way". Crops and lighting adjustments are allowed on your other photos; for the unedited one, get the light right when you shoot.
I sell print-on-demand. Do I need a photo of a real item?
Etsy allows print-on-demand sellers to use a stock photo mockup if the stock photo's owner has authorised its use.
Can I use AI images for a digital download?
If the download has a visual component, such as a printable or template, include a preview of the actual content. If it has no visual component, representative imagery including AI-generated images is allowed as long as it does not mislead buyers.
