Comparison
Template mockup vs photo-based mockup
A template mockup drops your design onto a stock photo of a blank product. A photo-based mockup starts from a photo of your actual product. For print-on-demand and merch sellers, the difference shows up in the rules.
| Category | Template mockup | Photo-based mockup |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A ready-made stock scene with a placeholder area where your artwork is warped onto a generic blank. | A photo of your own product, or a scene generated from it, so the blank, print and colour are the ones you sell. |
| Cost | Free or a one-off template licence; reused across every design. | A photo of each product and colour, then scenes from it; in PicBarn a scene set is 3 credits for 4 images. |
| Time | Seconds per design once the template is set up. | One photo session per blank and colour, then minutes per scene. |
| Accuracy | Shows the template's blank, not yours: fabric colour, print method, placement and size can differ from what ships. | Shows the real blank, colour and print, as long as the scene does not alter them. |
| Licensing | Depends on the template licence; Etsy accepts a stock photo mockup only "if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use". | Your own photo, so no third-party licence for the product image. |
| Platform rules | Etsy allows authorised stock mockups for print-on-demand. TikTok Shop does not allow placeholders or digital renderings, and flat or printed products must not be shown as 3D in AI images. | Meets TikTok Shop's requirement that images show what the customer receives, and can supply Etsy's real photo for non-POD listings. |
| Where it fails | Every shop uses the same templates, so listings look alike; warping looks fake on folds; misleading if the blank differs. | Needs physical samples of each product and colour. |
| Best for | Testing many designs quickly on Etsy print-on-demand before ordering samples. | Bestsellers, marketplaces with strict main image rules, and any listing where buyers ask "is this what I get?". |
Verdict
Template mockups are fast and cheap, and on Etsy they are explicitly allowed for print-on-demand when the template is licensed. They are a good way to test designs. Their weakness is that they show someone else's blank, so colour and print can differ from what arrives, and on TikTok Shop a rendering cannot be the main image at all.
Once a design sells, move it to photo-based images: order a sample, photograph it, and generate scenes from that photo. The listing then shows what the buyer actually receives, which is the line every marketplace draws.
Questions
Can I use template mockups on Etsy?
For print-on-demand items, Etsy allows a stock photo mockup if the stock photo's owner has authorised its use. Other listing types generally need at least one real, unedited photo of the item.
Are mockups allowed as the TikTok Shop main image?
TikTok Shop's listing policy does not allow placeholders or digital renderings, and the main image must be a front physical view on pure white. Use a photo of the real product.
What is wrong with a mockup if the design is the same?
The blank can differ: shade, fabric, neckline, print size and placement. If those differ from what ships, the image misrepresents the product, which every marketplace prohibits.
