AI-generated content disclosure

AI-generated content disclosure is the requirement to tell buyers or the platform when an image or video was made or significantly changed with AI, through a label, toggle, checkbox or metadata tag.

Every major marketplace now has a disclosure rule, and each asks for it in a different place. Sellers listing on more than one platform need to meet each rule separately.

TikTok Shop asks sellers to disclose significant AI use with on-screen text, a watermark, a sticker or the AI-generated toggle, and treats false disclosure as a violation. TikTok's wider policy requires labels on AI-generated content that shows realistic-appearing scenes or people, and it uses Content Credentials (C2PA) to label content from other platforms. Amazon asks for the keyword contains-synthetic-performer in the IPTC/XMP dc:subject field of images with photorealistic AI-generated people, and A+ asset upload has an "AI-generated people" checkbox. Etsy says sellers must disclose when an item is created using AI. Walmart says AI-generated images must be truthful, accurate and not misleading.

The biggest misunderstanding is that disclosure makes any AI image acceptable. It does not. TikTok Shop's AIGC rules still forbid changing the product's size, colour, shape or features, and Etsy still requires that the item does not look different from what the buyer receives. Disclosure covers how an image was made; accuracy is a separate rule.

A second mistake is choosing the wrong method. TikTok Shop's main image must have no added text or watermarks, so on the main image the toggle is the right choice, not an overlay.

PicBarn's model exports carry Amazon's tag; on other platforms, set the label or toggle when you upload.
