Ghost mannequin (invisible mannequin)

A ghost mannequin, or invisible mannequin, image shows a garment as if worn by an invisible body, made by photographing it on a mannequin and editing the mannequin out, often combining several shots.

Ghost-mannequin photos are a staple of apparel e-commerce. The garment is dressed on a mannequin, photographed from the front, then photographed again inside out or from the back to capture the inner neckline and label. The shots are composited and the mannequin is removed, leaving a garment that holds its 3D shape with no visible support.

Amazon's main image rules, as summarised in our sources, do not allow mannequins of any kind, hangers included, and ask for adult apparel to be shown on a standing model. A ghost-mannequin shot is therefore safer in a gallery slot than in the MAIN slot. TikTok Shop's main image must be a front physical view on a pure white background, and its listing policy requires children's swimwear and underwear to be shown flat.

Most ghost-mannequin failures are editing errors. A sliver of the mannequin's neck or a stand pole is left in. The inner neckline is pasted at the wrong angle, so the collar looks broken. Colour shifts between the front and back shots, so the composite has two slightly different shades. Over-smoothing removes the fabric texture that buyers use to judge quality.

The alternative is a garment shown on a person. A real model costs a shoot; an AI-generated model needs disclosure and, on Amazon, the contains-synthetic-performer tag.

PicBarn's virtual try-on tab keeps the garment pixels and generates the model around them, and model exports carry that tag.
