Main image

The main image is the first photo in a product listing, the one buyers see in search results, and on most marketplaces it must show the real product alone on a plain white background.

Every marketplace treats the first image differently from the rest. Amazon labels it MAIN, TikTok Shop and Walmart call it the main image, and Etsy calls it the first photo. It is the picture shown in search results and category pages, so it carries more rules than any other slot in the gallery.

Amazon's product image requirements ask for a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product filling 85% of the frame, shown whole and only once, with only the accessories that are included and no packaging unless the packaging is a feature. Mannequins of any kind are not allowed, and adult apparel goes on a standing model. TikTok Shop asks for a front physical view on a pure white background with no added logos, text, borders, watermarks or graphics, and says placeholders and digital renderings are not allowed. Walmart asks for seamless white 255/255/255 RGB.

Etsy is the exception. It has no white-background rule, but the first photo must be at least 635 px in both directions or it ranks lower, and it should be horizontal or square because the thumbnail is cropped.

The usual mistakes are small ones: an off-white backdrop that measures 248 rather than 255, a product sitting small in the middle of the frame, a lifestyle scene or an infographic promoted to slot one, or a box shown when the buyer receives only the item. Each of these breaks a published rule.

PicBarn's main image tab removes the background with Bria, places the cut-out on RGB 255 at 85% of the frame without redrawing the product, and the gallery pack puts your own photo, not a generated scene, in slot one.
