Packshot
A packshot is a plain, evenly lit studio photo of a product, often with its packaging and labels, made to show exactly what the item looks like so shoppers recognise it.
The term comes from advertising, where the pack shot is the closing frame of a commercial that shows the product and its packaging so viewers recognise it on the shelf. In e-commerce it has come to mean any clean, front-on product photo on a neutral or white background, the kind used for main images and catalogues.
The packaging part is where marketplace rules differ from advertising habit. Amazon's main image rules say no packaging unless the packaging is a feature, the whole product shown once, and only the accessories that are included. TikTok Shop's main image must show only what the customer receives, and placeholders and digital renderings are not allowed. Walmart allows only its own designated placeholder image.
Sellers get packshots wrong in a few predictable ways. A manufacturer's 3D render is used instead of a photo, which TikTok Shop does not allow on the main image. The retail box is shown when the buyer receives only the item, or several units are shown when one is sold. On eBay, stock photos are not allowed for used, damaged or defective items, so a manufacturer packshot cannot stand in for a photo of the actual item.
A good marketplace packshot is the product alone, in focus edge to edge, with no props and nothing that suggests a bundle.
PicBarn's main image tab turns an ordinary product photo into a packshot-style main image: Bria removes the background and the product is placed on RGB 255 at 85% of the frame, with its pixels left as shot.
