Shopify product image requirements and sizes
Shopify has file limits rather than content rules: your store, your theme and your choices. These are the limits from Shopify's Help Center and what they mean for a product page.
The rules
Maximum dimensions
"Your product and collection images can be any size up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels."
Under 20 MB
"Product and collection images need to have a file size smaller than 20 MB to be added to Shopify."
2048 x 2048 for square images
"For square product images, a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best."
PNG, then JPEG
"The best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG."
Other accepted formats
Shopify also accepts TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP, including animated GIF and WebP files.
One aspect ratio for main images
Use a consistent aspect ratio for all featured or main images so they display at the same size on collection pages.
Video limits
"Video length: Up to 10 minutes", "Video size: Up to 1 GB", "Video resolution: Up to 4K (4096 x 2160 px)", in MP4, MOV or WebM.
3D model limits
GLB or USDZ files, "File size: Up to 500 MB"; "If you upload a 3D model file that exceeds 15 MB, then your file is automatically optimized."
Hosted video links
YouTube and Vimeo links do not need to meet the video file requirements.
What this means in practice
Shopify does not police what is in your images; the limits are technical, and the look is up to your theme. That makes consistency the main job. Pick one aspect ratio for every product's first image, usually 1:1 at 2048 x 2048, so collection grids line up instead of jumping between tall and wide cards.
Collection banners have no official Shopify size: they depend on your theme, so check the theme's documentation before you crop a hero image. Keep source files under the 20 MB and 25 megapixel caps; a 2048 square JPEG or PNG is a fraction of that.
If the same product feeds Amazon, TikTok Shop, Walmart or Etsy, their rules still apply on those channels, so a scene that is perfect as your Shopify hero may not be allowed as an Amazon main image. PicBarn's gallery pack keeps your own photo in slot 1, with a pure-white version from the main image tab, so the store and the marketplaces can share the same real first image and use scenes and try-on further down the gallery.
