T-shirt and apparel photos: on model, flat lay and the rules

Apparel buyers need to see fit on a body, the print or fabric up close, and the exact colour they will get. On Amazon the main image rule is stricter than most sellers expect: adult clothing goes on a standing model, never a mannequin.

The gallery this category needs

In upload order. Slot one is always your own photo.
  1. 1

Your own photo of the garment on pure white: on a standing model for Amazon adult apparel, or flat for other marketplaces

It is the image that gets checked first, and Amazon requires adult apparel on a standing model with no mannequins.

  2. 2

Flat lay of the full garment, front and back

Shows the cut, length and back print without a body changing the proportions.

  3. 3

    Print or fabric close-up

Print quality, stitching and knit are what buyers judge to decide whether the price is fair.

  4. 4

Second model shot in a different pose or setting

Shows how the garment moves and sits, which answers fit questions a flat lay cannot.

  5. 5

Size chart image with your own measurements

Size is the top apparel return reason, and a chart in the gallery is seen far more than one in the description.

  6. 6

    Colourway lineup

Shows the range at once, so buyers choose a colour without opening every variant.

Platform rules that bite here

  • Amazon

Main images allow no mannequins of any kind, including hangers, and adult apparel must be shown on a standing model. Ghost mannequin composites and hanger shots will not pass for adult clothing.

  • Amazon

Photorealistic AI-generated people must carry the IPTC/XMP keyword contains-synthetic-performer before upload; real people edited with AI do not need it.

  • Etsy

Print-on-demand sellers may use a stock mockup if authorised, but most other listings need one real, unedited photo of the actual item, and items created using AI must be disclosed.

  • TikTok Shop

Avoid one base photo with colour swaps via editing software, and disclose significant AI use, such as a generated model, with the AI-generated toggle or a label.

What gets this category rejected or ignored

  • A ghost mannequin or hanger shot as the Amazon main image for adult clothing.
  • An AI model uploaded to Amazon without the contains-synthetic-performer tag.
  • Recoloured variants that drift from the real dye, especially navy, burgundy and heather tones.
  • A model shot where the print is warped by folds so the design is unreadable.
  • A size chart copied from a supplier that does not match your actual blanks.

Questions

Can I use a flat lay as my Amazon main image?

Not for adult apparel. Amazon's rule is a standing model for adult clothing and no mannequins of any kind, so use a flat lay as a gallery image instead.

Can I put my flat lay on an AI model?

Yes. If the model is a photorealistic AI person, tag the file with contains-synthetic-performer for Amazon and disclose AI use on TikTok Shop.

Are mockups allowed?

Etsy allows authorised stock mockups for print-on-demand listings. TikTok Shop does not allow placeholders or digital renderings as the main image, so photograph or generate from a real garment there.

How should I show colourways?

Photograph each colour if you can, or recolour from one shoot and compare against real samples. TikTok Shop's quality guidance warns against colour swaps from one base photo.
